Propylene glycol is an odorless, colorless liquid used for the production of consumer and industrial products. Generally recognized as safe (GRAS), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves its use as an indirect food additive. Propylene glycol is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many other practical applications.
Pharmaceutical Uses:
Pharmaceutical propylene glycol USP / EP is used as an inactive adjuvant. As a means, it transfers flavors in food and drinks, helps to preserve the taste and moisture in pet and farm animal feed, and acts as a carrier for the active ingredients found in cough syrup and gel capsules. Propylene glycol keeps personal hygiene products consistent, soft and moist. This includes deodorant sticks, sunscreen, shampoos, body lotions, face creams and lipstick. Additionally, it acts as an additive to foam stabilization in body care and health care products.
Industrial applications:
Industrial propylene glycol is used in industry as a heat carrier that protects against pressure bursts and corrosion, controls viscosity and dissolves active substances. It is also used in paints and coatings to protect against wear and weather, as an aircraft defroster, in liquid detergents, antifreeze and as a solvent in printing ink. As a basic structural element, it is used in its raw form for the production of plastic plastics, such as unsaturated polyester resins. Resins are used in windmill blades, furniture, marine constructions, gelcoats, synthetic marble coatings, sheet metal mixtures and on heavy impact surfaces such as floors.
Application in medicine:
For medicinal purposes, propylene glycol is used as a solvent in a variety of formats: injected, oral and topical. For injectable drugs, 40% is propylene glycol. Side effects do not occur with normal use.
Special application:
Aerolyzed forms of propylene glycol are used to create dense "smoke" without flames. Aerolyzed products are used by the United States military as a smokescreen to hide army movements on the battlefield. In addition, the product is also used to simulate smoke in various types of fire training procedures, as well as theater productions, according to CDC. Additional applications The largest amount of propylene glycol is found in the textile industry, where it is used to manufacture polyester fibers.
